Author Interview: Hannah E. M.
- Tell us about yourself. How long have you been writing, and what made you want to pursue it as a career?
My storytelling hobby began when I was old enough to draw stick-figures. Before I could spell, I drew stories. As I grew older, I started actually writing and dreamed of publishing a novel. When I was thirteen, I joined The Young Writer's Workshop and began to seriously pursue writing.
Now, I’m a little older and I write a little less. As much as I love writing, I don’t think it will become my “main” career. But nonetheless, I can’t completely stop writing! It is such a unique and personal form of storytelling, and has helped me process harder things in my life. Writing is too special to completely give up. So even though I won’t be publishing a book anytime soon, I still love creating stories.
- Can you tell us about your main WIP?
My “heart” project is about two ghosts who try to become alive again whilst reconciling with their pasts. It touches on topics of loneliness, isolation, and family. This story has piles upon piles of drafts, some rougher than others. I don’t know if it will ever see the light of day, but I can’t seem to stop working on it.
- What inspires you to write? Who are some authors you look up to?
One of my favorite authors is Sharon Creech. Her books tackle more “adult” topics, but make them understandable and appropriate for children. Her book Walk Two Moons is one of my favorites.
- What is the craziest story you’ve written?
Oh boy, strap on your seat belts…
I once wrote a Disney princess fanfic where all of the princesses went to a special school. My protagonist, Princess Aurora, was bullied by Belle the Bully. But then the story took a drastically dark turn because one day Belle the Bully suddenly died of cancer. It ended with a scene where Aurora cheered at Belle’s funeral.
So uh…. Yeah. You never know what will come out of the minds of a child.
- What would your main character think of you if they met you in real life and knew you were their author?
Hmm… I honestly think that they would think “Oh, you’re my author? That makes so much sense.” And then we could get coffee and talk about antiques or something, and have a jolly time.
- What is your favorite non-writing hobby to do?
Hehe… I have too many non-writing hobbies. I enjoy sewing, baking bread, and doing things with my hands. I also play the piano and violin. And I like to go outdoors to bike, hike, camp, ski, and swim. I promise that I am never bored.
- If you had to choose between cookies and ice cream, what would your choice be?
Hmm… this is hard. Could I have oatmeal cookies with ice cream on top? Because that is the BEST combo. If I had to choose cookies, I would choose those classic chocolate chip cookes that are soft and chewy. And if I had to choose ice cream, I would choose rocky road.
- Do you have a blog/email list/socials where we can find you online?
I have a super inactive Instagram page, a blog called Precarious Book Stacks and an email list (where I am currently working on a series about the aches and pains of growing up).
