Friday, July 2nd

I sigh deeply as I plop down on a bench outside of Forest-Lane Airport. For July, the airport isn’t as crowded as I thought it would be, though plenty noisy. Cars stop by to pick up friends and family. A teen here and there, an elderly couple, a family of four. Once they clear out everything falls silent except for the occasional announcement from the airport speakers. My best friend Shiloh will be here to pick me up in a couple minutes but with my spare time I decide to munch on a granola bar I brought with me.

 I allow my mind to wander until a buzz from my phone brings me back to reality. 

Mom: Hey Jo, how was the flight?

 I finish the last of my granola bar before responding. 

 Josie: It went well! There wasn’t a lot of turbulence overall, and I got a nice nap. How’s everything at home?

  Mom: Everything’s going well at home, but we miss you

Josie: I miss you guys too. I’m gonna run – Shiloh just got here. Love you!!

 I stuff my phone in my pocket as a silver Toyota pulls up and my best friend jumps out. She’s dressed in a pair of denim shorts, similar to my own, and a light blue top that compliments her darker features. Her hair is in a half up, half down style which I think looks absolutely gorgeous, but I don’t have time to compliment her before she practically runs me over. 

  “Jo!!” She practically tackles me to the ground in her excitement but I hug her back just as tight. 

  “How was the trip??” Hope asks as she grabs my suitcase and goes to put it in the trunk of her car. 

 “The trip went well.” I say as I get in the car and buckle myself in. “I’m driving right?” I grin sheepishly. Hope and I have been joking for years about me driving her places, when we both know I’m terrible at it.

 “Over my dead body,” Hope replies, buckling herself, with the most serious tone I’ve ever heard her use. But then both of us burst into laughter until neither of us can breathe anymore. 

 “This is the m-most stupid t-thing to laugh about,” I get out between gasps for air. 

 “But it’s funny!!” Hope wheezes. “Anyway, where do you wanna go for lunch?” she asks once both of us can breathe again.

 I think for a moment. “How about the Coral Reef Cafe?” 

  “Yes! And we should take our food to Seaglass Cove and watch the waves while we eat.” Shiloh turns the car and puts it in reverse. 

  “Ummmm, well I’d rather eat at the Cafe- just cause it’s been a while and I miss being there,” I force a smile and try to ignore the too familiar waves lapping in my mind. Screams, fear, saltwater. Something I wish I didn’t have to remember, something I wish I could live my life free of. But I can’t. 

 “Yeah, that’s fine, we can go to Seaglass another day. We have the whole summer anyway!” 

 The whole summer, I think to myself and smile. It’s going to be a great one too.

 “Hey, send a text in the group chat with Noah, see if he can come,” she says as she pulls out of the airport parking lot.

 “Will do,” I pull out my phone and start typing.
